CS/CIT105P - Foundations of Computing and
Problem Solving (4)
- This page will list all the assignments
for the class, their descriptions, links to tutorials for more info, and links
to the lecture notes (see below).
- The links that are BOLDED
are links to the actual descriptions of the assignments, and step-by-step
instructions on completing the assignments.
- The links that are NOT BOLDED
are links to hints, tips, and tutorials on how to use the software used
in the assignments.
- The Intro page will give you
a background of the class, its history, and help you get started on what
to expect for the class: Introduction
- (For those who are detail-oriented:

this detail approach confusing, so, use at your own discretion.)
- Attendence
- You will receive points for
attending the mandatory Organizational Meeting meeting, (or for the substitute
meeting). The initial meeting is most important to get you started with
the course. ( RH 314).
- Introductory Assignment:
- Activate UMKC Email Account
and Email Instructor UserID (Extra Credit)
- Include your full name,
your UMKC User ID/SSO/Email address, and any other email address you
might be using for the semester.
- (NOTE: If you are a Incomplete
"carry-over" student, be sure to ask for your Quiz Password, if you
have not yet received it.)
- To receive Extra Credit
for the Email, write a short Bio, include the following Info:
- A short introduction,
just a few sentences, telling a bit about yourself: Your major,
your work, your family, your goals for the class, your plans for
degree program for the future, what you hope to do after graduation,
etc.

- Remember: To submit your answers for the Internet
assignment type (or cut and paste) your answers into an email message,
or into a Microsoft Word document and submit the file via email
attachment. Note, all documents
you submit must be in Microsoft Office format (95/97/2000 is fine).
- Word Processing
- The word processor we will use this semester
is Microsoft Word. Since this is the only word processor I have access
to all word processing documents you submit must be in Microsoft Word.
In class we will discuss basic concepts of word processing and some
of the subtile issues with Microsoft Word.

- Spreadsheet
- The spreadsheet program we will use this semester
is Microsoft Excel. Since this is the only spreadsheet program I have
access to all spreadsheet documents you submit must be in Microsoft
Excel. In class we will discuss basic concepts of spreadsheets and
some of the subtile issues with Microsoft Excel.

- HW: Spreadsheet practice
problem This is an optional exercise and need not be graded. You
may find it helpful when estimating your grade. If you do decide to
turn it in, it will count as Extra Credit. (Remember that formulas
are the most important thing in a spreadsheet.)

- This assignment give you practice with drawing and merging the contents
of a spreadsheet with a word processing document.
- Project (10%)
- You propose the topic of your
project. The only requirements are that it be (1) technical, (2) related
to computers or technology or software, and (3) challenging to you. You
will also want to pick something that is interesting to you. The content
is your choice, and does not have to be related to technology if you use
a software tool to create the project. Don't worry about the size and
level of difficulty. Any project idea you have can be scaled to fit the
expectations of the assignment.
- Many people choose to create
a Power Point project. If you choose to use Power Point, be sure to review
the Power Point assignment link for guidelines.
- Quizzes (80%)
- Current Students will have a quiz for each chapter, containing 80
questions distributed over the various chapters in the textbook.
- Current Students can find Quizzes on the Blackboard Course

- The 80 Questions will be distributed over the 15 Chapters. There will be 2-10 questions (from the corresponding chapter) for each Quiz.
- For prior to Aug. 17, 2007,

(Ch.1); Quiz2: History of Internet (Ch.2-3); Quiz3: Hardware/Software
(Ch.4-5-6); Quiz4: Storage (Ch.7); Quiz5: Operating System
(Ch.8); Quiz6: Communications & Networks (Ch.9); Quiz7:
Computers & Work (Ch.10); Quiz8: Computers & Society (Ch.11);
- Students finishing an Incomplete
will need a Quiz password.
- Students finishing an Incomplete
can also click the My-Progress link for information
on Quizzes and for Grades.
- Extra Credit Project available
for those interested. Extra Credit points will also be given for attending
the Organizational /Orientation Meeting. Another Extra Credit option is to submit a full Resume or CV, with appropriate formatting.

Assignments can be sent via an email attachment (see instructions on Email
HW Page), or by linking the docs to a Web page and submitting the Web page
URL via email.
