  • Special lab: Computer Skills 101. If you have little or no experience using computers (or the IBM PC) this lab is for you. If it has been a few years since you have used an IBM PC you may also want to attend to refresh your skills.

The first topics we will discuss are basic computer components (hardware and software) and Internet concepts and skills.

At the first part of the semester we will focus almost exclusively on technical issues (CS105). As the semester progresses we will increasingly shift our focus to non-technical issues (CS106).

Some of the labs that offer help with information about or activating your Exchange email account are:

Assignment:

None. During the first two or three weeks of class we will focus on CS105 concepts and skills. This will provide you with some of the technical background that will be helpful as we discuss non-technical related issues.

Assignment:

  • Read Lecture Notes: "Why is privacy important in ordinary situations?"
  • Read chapter 3 in Baase. (wiretapping and encryption)
  • Think about the topic for your Reaction Paper. Description of Reaction Paper and relevant films.

  • Finalize your project plan. Your proposal should be typed (Microsoft Word format). It should include your purpose for selecting the project you did, and an outline of what you hope to accomplish. Your outline should be such that you can identify 2 or 3 checkpoints. At each checkpoint we can discuss your progress and consider any adjustments that should be made in your project.

PtO Finals Week
  • The Finals schedule is not clear about the Final Exam time for our class meeting time. Thus, we will meet at the usual time during finals week. If you have a conflict, just let me know, and we will work something out. The CS105 and CS106 finals exam times will be offered on the same night, and time, unless other arrangements are made.
    • The finals for the CS105 and CS106 classes will be the usual Tues/Thurs times of 6-9 p.m. in room 314 Royal Hall.
  • All assignments/quizzes/projects should be completed the week before Finals Week. The Tuesday of Finals Week is the last day that any assignments/quizzes/projects can be accepted, to allow time for grading. Grades are due from the Instructor to the PACE Office on Friday morning of Finals Week. See the Weekly Overview for exact dates.
  • Those not able to finish on time might want to consider an Incomplete grade.
