Notes & FAQs:
  • =========================================
  • Organizational/Orientation Meetings:
  • As of Fall, 2005, we have a new format for the classes. Instead of a lecture-classroom format, it is now a Web-based format.
  • The dates in purple above, are the days we have reserved a classroom as listed in the class schedule. These dates were arbitrary.
  • As long as we are able to meet for an Organizational/Orientation Meeting to get started, you have fulfilled your attendence obligation for the class.
  • You only need to attend ONE Orientation Meeting you need not worry about the other dates... just do the work. They are merely to give you a good start to the class.
  • The instructor for this class is Nicole English. Any questions or concerns you may, please send email to the instructor at EnglishN@umkc.edu.
  • =========================================
  • About the CIT Block in the PACE Program:
  • The CIT105P & CIT106P classes are presented together in a PACE "Block" that allows you to take related classes together in one semester for a total of 12 credit hours, a full load, for students normally in the PACE program.
  • The CIT105P & CIT106P are presented in a PACE Block along with Mike Henry's ComSt 260 class to complete the Block of 12 credit hours. Each class is worth 4 credit hours, so if you take the entire Block, you will be enrolled for 12 credit hours.
  • However, since the classes are now presented in an online format, it is not essential that the 3 classes, (or both CIT105P & CIT106P), be taken together at the same time.
  • It is still recommended that the classes be taken together as a block, but it is no longer required. You can take the classes one at a time, if you wish.
  • The Website still reflects the fact that most students still take the CIT105P & CIT106P classes together as a pair, but you need only do the work for the class or classes you are actually enrolled in.
  • =========================================
  • Calendar/Schedule:
  • This weekly Calendar Schedule is a suggested structure for planning homework load over the semester. It is not required that you follow this Schedule verbatim, it is merely a tool to help you plan your time.
  • This is a suggested Calender Schedule for finishing both 105P and 106P, in one 8-week session.
  • The pale yellow columns refer to 105P coursework, and the canary yellow columns refer to the 106P course work.
  • However, you need ONLY do the coursework for the class (or classes) you are actually enrolled in.
  • You do not have to follow this schedule exactly, it is merely an example of how the assignments and quizzes can be completed over the course of the semester, as an aid to plan your own work.
  • However, all the work needs to be done by the end of the semester in order to receive a grade for that semester.
  • Assignments can be found in the Assignments folder, under Course Content.
  • Homework assignments and Quizzes are "due" the week following their being posted. (But these are "soft" Due Dates, or Target Due Dates, to encourage you to plan your studies.)
  • All Due Dates are negotiable depending on intervening circumstances (weather, family crisis, work responsibilities, etc.), except for Final Grades Due Date, (which is beyond the control of the instructor).
  • NOTE: The dates for this Table are more current and supercede any conflicting dates on the Lessons page (or due to unforseen complications).
  • (Remember that if you are enrolled in both classes, then remember that you are taking *2* classes, which each have their own HW assignments, quizzes, grades, etc.)
  • =========================================
  • Calendar Conventions & Abbreviations:
  • This Calendar/Schedule is only a tentative guide to help you plan your studies, subject to change due to time, weather, complications, family obligations, etc. (Things inevitably come up. You can work around obligations, at your own pace, as long as the work gets done.)
  • Assignments for reading textbooks are generally given the week relevant to the Quiz or Assignment.
  • Do not over-think the material. You will be better off just "scanning" the textbooks, rather than trying to read each word and understand each sentence.
  • Textbooks for readings: DC refers to Discovering Computers text for 105P, B refers to Baase text for 106P. (For more info on Textbooks, see the Syllabus link on the Menu Bar above. Textbooks are available at the UMKC Bookstore, or you can order them on your own off the Web.)
  • The dates in purple above, are the days we have reserved a classroom as listed in the class schedule.
  • Quiz and Chapter topics are generally presented within parenthesis, e.g. (Privacy).
  • The columns are separated by two shades of YELLOW. 105P items are indicated in the pale, light yellow columns. 106P items are indicated in darker, canary yellow columns in the Calendar Schedule.
  • Quiz items are indicated in Red.
  • Project/Paper due dates are indicated in Blue.
  • (Remember that if you are enrolled in both classes, then you are taking *2* classes, which each have their own HW assignments, quizzes, grades, etc.)
  • =========================================
  • Textbooks:
  • In the Calendar, DC refers to Discovering Computers text for 105P, B refers to Baase text for 106P. There is one textbook for each class, one for 105P and one for 106P. You only need the book for the class (or classes) you are enrolled in.
  • For more info on Textbooks, see the Syllabus link on the Menu Bar above.
  • Textbooks are available at the UMKC Bookstore, or you can order them on your own off the Web
  • Homework assignments and Quizzes are "due" the week following their being posted. (But these are "soft" Due Dates, or Target Due Dates, to encourage you to plan your studies.)
  • =========================================
  • Videos:
  • Videos will be available in the lower level at the MNL Media Desk. The suggested video to see for Privacy and Security issues is "Enemy of the State" (1998) with Will Smith, Jon Voight, Gene Hackman, Regina King, Lisa Bonet, and Gabriel Byrne. Videos are not required, they are merely for your enrichment. They include commercial films, bio-pics, documentarys, etc.
  • =========================================
  • Quizzes & Grades:
  • Current students need only to click on the Blackboard link to Course Content for the Quizzes, and on the Blackboard My Grades link, (or the Tools link), to view grades.
  • See more info on Quizzes on the Assigns page and the Introduction page, found on the Menu bar above.
  • (Remember that if you are enrolled in both classes, then you are taking *2* classes, which each have their own HW assignments, quizzes, grades, etc.)
  • Students finishing Incompletes generally use the old system of Quizzes (on my site) and will need a Quiz password. (See more info below, and contact me directly by email at EnglishN@umkc.edu.)
  • (TIP: It is best to start with a fresh browser when logging in to a page, like Blackboard or for taking a quiz, and close it out afterwards for security reasons.)
  • Quiz and Chapter topics are generally presented on the Calendar/Schedule within parenthesis, e.g. (Privacy).
  • Quiz items are indicated on the Calendar/Schedule in Red.
  • =========================================
  • Due Dates:
  • Homework assignments and Quizzes are "due" the following week (following the week when they are posted).
  • Any questions or concerns you might have can be directed to me via email at EnglishN@umkc.edu.
  • =========================================
  • Info for Students Finishing Incompletes:
  • For Students finishing Incompletes, and using the old system of testing (on my site), contact me directly by email at EnglishN@umkc.edu.
  • For Students finishing Incompletes, and using the old system of testing (on my site), this is how you log in: Use your UMKC UserID Username (SSO), and the Quiz Password for your Grades page or Quizzes.
  • Send me email at EnglishN@umkc.edu if you have any problems.
  • =========================================

  • Instructor adheres to UMKC Policies of Student Conduct concerning Academic Honesty and Fair Use of sources for projects and papers.
  • Students who violate these guidelines will be subject to sanctions as outlined in section 200.010 of the Student Conduct Code. All such cases will be forwarded to the Primary Administrative Officer in the Student Life Office for appropriate action.
  • Students with disabilities are welcome to join the class. Students with disabilities should contact the Office of Services for Students with Diabilities to coordinate accomodations.
